What is Profinet?

Profinet (Process Field Network) is the leading Industrial Ethernet standard developed by Siemens and widely used globally. It uses standard Ethernet cables (RJ45) but manages data packets much differently than office computers, transmitting them at sub-millisecond speeds.

Profibus vs Profinet

  • Profibus: Legacy generation, uses purple serial cable. Slow (max 12 Mbps).
  • Profinet: New generation, uses green ethernet cable. Very fast (100 Mbps or 1 Gbps).

Why So Fast?

Profinet takes data directly from the physical layer without passing it through the TCP/IP stack (internet protocol). This is called "Real-Time (RT)". If this speed isn't enough, it provides microsecond-level synchronization in "Isochronous Real-Time (IRT)" mode (e.g., for high-speed packaging machines).

Amazeng devices are compatible with special Gateway modules for integration into Profinet networks.
